Most ceiling speakers are two-way designs asked to cover the whole spectrum from a single pair of drivers. The CCM7.3 S2 is not: it is a passive three-way in-ceiling loudspeaker from Bowers & Wilkins’ Reference Series, with a 25 mm Carbon Dome tweeter, a dedicated 100 mm Continuum FST midrange and twin 130 mm Aerofoil bass drivers, all mounted in a reinforced baffle with an integrated backbox. Why three-way matters overhead

In a two-way ceiling speaker, one cone must reproduce bass and the midrange at once, and it is the midrange – dialogue, vocals, the body of almost every instrument – that suffers first. The CCM7.3 S2 gives that range its own Continuum FST driver, using the same cone material developed for the 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers. Speech in films stays intelligible at low volume, and music keeps its texture instead of turning into background wash.

The integrated backbox advantage

An open-backed ceiling speaker performs differently in every ceiling, because the cavity behind it becomes part of the enclosure. The CCM7.3 S2’s integrated backbox fixes that variable: performance is predictable from room to room, and less sound leaks into the space above. It does mean planning matters – the standard cut-out is 332 x 332 mm with 194.5 mm of depth behind the surface, and the optional PMK7C pre-mount kit uses a slightly different 335 x 335 mm opening, so confirm the method before cutting.

Where it belongs

Use the CCM7.3 S2 where the channel matters: front left, centre and right positions in a discreet home cinema, high-quality surround channels, or stereo music in kitchens, living rooms and media spaces where floor or wall speakers are not wanted. As a passive design it needs a suitable amplifier or AV receiver and a source – plan those as part of the system.
