Bowers & Wilkins Formation Wedge Silver Speaker

Bowers and Wilkins Formation Wedge – The Wireless Speaker Shaped Like the Sound It Makes

The Formation Wedge is a wireless loudspeaker built into a distinctive 120-degree wedge cabinet, a shape chosen so its five drive units can spread sound evenly across a wide listening area from a single box. Finished in silver, it combines 240 watts of amplification with the Formation wireless platform for multiroom streaming at high resolution.

Inside, two 25mm decoupled double-dome tweeters and two 90mm FST midrange drivers handle the detail, while a 150mm subwoofer built into the cabinet supplies the low end most one-box speakers lack. The result is a single speaker that fills a room the way a small stereo system does, without stands, cables or a second box.

Why the wedge shape is functional

A conventional box speaker fires everything forward, so sound quality changes quickly as you move off to the side – a real problem for a speaker meant to serve a whole room. The Wedge angles its tweeter and midrange pairs across a 120-degree arc, so listeners spread around a kitchen, studio or living room share a similar tonal balance. The cabinet’s curved, internally braced form also suppresses the resonances that make plastic smart speakers sound boxy.

Formation multiroom, done properly

Formation is Bowers and Wilkins’ own wireless system, built for tight synchronisation between rooms and support for high-resolution streams. A Wedge can play alone, pair with a second Wedge for true stereo, or join Formation Bars, Duos and Flex speakers around the home, all from the B and W Music app or AirPlay 2. Unlike generic multiroom, the platform was designed by the loudspeaker engineers, and it shows in the timing and stability.

Who the Formation Wedge suits

Choose the Wedge for a kitchen, studio, bedroom or living room that deserves real hi-fi from one elegant object, or as the starting point of a Formation whole-home system. The silver finish suits lighter, Scandinavian-style interiors. If you want stereo imaging above all, buy two; if you want one room filled properly, one is enough.

Set-up and control

Out of the box, the Wedge needs power and the Bowers and Wilkins Music app: the app finds the speaker on your network, applies updates, and connects streaming services and AirPlay 2. Physical controls are minimal by design – daily volume and playback live in the app, in AirPlay, or in the streaming service itself. For stereo, a second Wedge pairs in the app and the two divide left and right channels over the Formation network with sample-accurate sync.
