Audio-Technica AT-LP60X Fully Automatic Belt-Drive Turntable

The Audio-Technica AT-LP60X is a fully automatic belt-drive turntable that removes every barrier between a listener and a record collection. Place a record on the die-cast aluminium platter, press start, and the tonearm lifts, moves across and lowers itself; when the side ends, it returns and the platter stops. A built-in switchable phono preamplifier means it connects directly to powered speakers, an amplifier or a receiver whether or not that equipment has a phono input. It is the simplest credible way into vinyl, built by a company that has made phono cartridges since 1962.

Automatic operation, done properly

Full automation is more than a convenience. New listeners worry, reasonably, about dropping a stylus onto a record or dragging it across the surface, and experienced listeners with large collections appreciate a deck that can be operated one-handed and never left with the stylus sitting in a run-out groove. The AT-LP60X handles the whole cycle, and a tonearm lift button still allows manual cueing part-way through a side. Tracking force and alignment are set at the factory for the integral cartridge, so there is nothing to adjust and nothing to get wrong out of the box.

The cartridge and the signal path

The integral Dual Magnet cartridge carries a replaceable diamond stylus, type ATN3600LC. When the stylus wears, you replace the stylus alone rather than the cartridge, and Audio-Technica also offers the ATN3600LE elliptical stylus as an upgrade for listeners who want more detail from the same deck. The redesigned tonearm base and headshell improve tracking and reduce resonance over the model this turntable replaced. The phono preamplifier provides 36 dB of RIAA-equalised gain, giving 2.5 mV output in phono mode for an amplifier’s phono stage, or 150 mV in line mode for any ordinary input or powered speaker. The external AC adapter performs AC to DC conversion outside the chassis, away from the sensitive cartridge wiring, and the DC servo-controlled motor holds speed with wow and flutter below 0.25 percent.

Connecting it to your system

Set the rear switch to line and the AT-LP60X plugs into powered speakers or any line-level input, which is how most new systems are built. Set it to phono and it feeds a traditional phono stage in an older amplifier instead, so the deck grows with the system rather than being replaced by it. The detachable output cable is a 3.5 mm to dual RCA lead of about 1.2 m. The turntable measures 359.5 x 97.5 x 373.3 mm, weighs 2.6 kg, and arrives with the platter and belt, a felt mat, the 45 RPM adapter for singles, the RCA cable, the AC adapter and a removable hinged dust cover.

Everyday ownership

Keep the deck on a flat, stable surface away from the speakers so vibration cannot reach the stylus, keep records clean, and replace the stylus when playback starts to sound dull or mistracked. The dust cover keeps the platter and arm clean between sessions and lifts off entirely when shelf height is tight. The power supply accepts 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz, so the deck travels between homes and countries without converters.
