The microphone channel supplies 18 V phantom power, not the 48 V found on larger consoles. Many microphones work happily within that range, but some condensers specify full 48 V, so check your microphone’s requirement before relying on it. Dynamic microphones, the usual choice for live vocals and presentations, do not need phantom power at all. Knowing this one detail in advance avoids the common disappointment of a condenser microphone performing below its best on a small mixer.

Setting a clean mix

Good results come from gain structure, not from pushing faders. Start with channel and master levels low, raise the microphone gain until strong peaks sit comfortably below clipping, then bring the stereo sources in underneath the voice rather than over it. Use the two-band EQ sparingly: a little less low end often cleans up a voice in a reflective room more effectively than adding brightness. Turning the master down cannot repair an input that is already distorting, so set the input first.

What it connects to, and what it does not do

The main output is line level, so passive speakers still need a power amplifier between the mixer and the cabinets; powered speakers connect directly. The ZMX52 does not record to a computer by itself. If you need a digital copy, feed its output into a separate audio interface or recorder.
