Description
ProFocus AP003 Smart Microphone (USB-C)
The ProFocus AP003 is a plug-and-play USB-C microphone for Android smartphones, made for people who record voice on a phone and need it to sound noticeably better than the phone’s built-in microphone: vloggers, interviewers, teachers, journalists and anyone recording reels, lessons or field reports. It connects directly through the USB-C port with an integrated 1.2 m cable, draws its power from the phone itself, and needs no battery, app or pairing step.
The cardioid condenser capsule focuses on the voice in front of it and reduces room sound from the sides and rear, which is what makes speech recorded in offices, classrooms and streets stay intelligible. The published specification lists a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, sensitivity of -38 dB, a signal-to-noise ratio of 78 dB or better, and digital conversion at 48 kHz / 16-bit, the standard rate for video work.
Key Features
- Direct USB-C connection for Android phones with OTG support
- Cardioid condenser capsule tuned for voice
- Plug and play: no battery to charge, no app to install
- Powered by the host device, so it never runs out mid-recording
- 48 kHz / 16-bit digital audio
- Anodised aluminium body weighing about 28 g
- Metal clip and foam windscreen included
- Also works with USB-C laptops and tablets
Why an external microphone changes phone video
A phone’s built-in microphone is placed for calls, not for filming: it sits far from the subject and picks up the whole room. Moving the capsule closer to the speaker, clipped on or held near the subject, raises the voice level relative to background noise before any processing happens. The AP003’s cardioid pattern adds a second layer of control by rejecting sound arriving from behind the microphone, which is why this format is the standard step-up for interviews, explainers and on-location pieces to camera.
Everyday use
The metal clip attaches the microphone to clothing or a stand, the foam windscreen tames plosives and light wind, and the 1.2 m integrated cable gives working distance from the phone while it stays on a tripod. Because the microphone is host-powered, a full day of shooting needs no charging breaks; unplug it and it is off. The aluminium body keeps the weight near 28 g, light enough to live in a camera bag or pocket permanently.
