The Lithe Audio 03255 is a compact passive in-ceiling speaker built for rooms where a conventional loudspeaker would intrude on the design. It is a 4 inch two-way design with a polypropylene woofer and a 0.75 inch silk cone tweeter, mounted flush in the ceiling behind a frameless magnetic grille so that almost nothing of the speaker is visible once installed. At 83 mm overall depth it is a low-profile model, made for ceilings with shallow cavities such as bathrooms, garden rooms, dropped ceilings and pitched roofs, and it carries an IP44 rating. The 03255 is a passive speaker, so it connects by speaker cable to an external amplifier or to a powered Lithe Audio master ceiling speaker as the matching second channel. It is sold individually, which lets a project use exactly the number of speakers each room needs.

Two-way sound from a small opening

Splitting the work between a dedicated woofer and a separate tweeter is what separates a two-way ceiling speaker from a basic single-driver unit. The 4 inch polypropylene cone handles the midrange and bass region, where polypropylene’s stiffness and moisture tolerance are practical advantages in kitchens and bathrooms, while the small silk dome tweeter reproduces the high frequencies that carry vocal detail, cymbals and the sense of space in a recording. Passive design and system building

Because the 03255 has no built-in amplifier, system design stays flexible. In a conventional setup it wires back to a stereo or multi-zone amplifier like any other passive loudspeaker, with its 8 ohm impedance and 25 W RMS rating suiting the modest amplifier powers normally used for distributed audio. Within the Lithe Audio range it also serves as the passive partner to the matching 4 inch Bluetooth master speaker, connected by speaker cable so the pair plays one source in stereo. Sold singly, it can equally be used alone in a small bathroom or cloakroom, in pairs for a kitchen or bedroom, or in larger numbers across open-plan and commercial spaces, with each room’s amplifier channel deciding what plays there.

Installation notes

The speaker fits a 160 mm diameter ceiling cut-out, and a cutting template is included to mark it accurately. The overall diameter is 186 mm and the unit weighs 1 kg, so standard plasterboard ceilings carry it without difficulty, but the shallow 83 mm depth should still be checked against the actual void, including any insulation, pipes or joists, before cutting. The frameless grille attaches magnetically, which makes removal for redecorating simple, and the grille can be painted to match the ceiling colour so the installation all but disappears. Speaker cable routing and any amplifier or mains work connected with the wider system should be planned before the ceiling is closed, and electrical work should be carried out by a qualified installer where required.

Where it works best

The 03255 is aimed at background and everyday listening: music in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and home offices, and distributed audio in hotel rooms, restaurants, salons and retail spaces where visible speakers would clutter the interior. Its IP44 rating and moisture-tolerant cone make it one of the few sensible choices directly in a bathroom ceiling, away from direct water jets. It is not a substitute for a dedicated hi-fi or home cinema loudspeaker where high volume and deep bass are the priority; its strength is discreet, even coverage at sensible listening levels, delivered from a fitting the room’s occupants barely notice.
