Polk Audio V6 In-Ceiling Speaker

Polk Audio V6S In-Ceiling Speaker

The Polk Audio V6S is a single in-ceiling speaker that plays a complete stereo signal on its own, part of Polk’s Vanishing Series of built-in loudspeakers. Where a conventional ceiling speaker handles one channel, the V6S combines a 6.5-inch woofer with two separate 0.75-inch silk dome tweeters and dual voice-coil stereo wiring, so one unit can reproduce both left and right channels in rooms where a second speaker position is impractical. A switchable stereo and surround mode adds flexibility: run it as a stereo speaker for music in a kitchen, bathroom or corridor, or switch it to surround duty as a single overhead or rear effects speaker in a home theatre. Once installed, the wafer-thin grille sits flush with the ceiling and can be painted to match, leaving the room looking clean while the system fills it with sound.

Key features

• Single-speaker stereo design with dual tweeters and stereo/surround switching
• 6.5-inch Dynamic Balance polypropylene woofer for clear midrange and punchy bass
• Dual 0.75-inch swivel-mount silk dome tweeters that can be aimed at the listening area
• Paintable wafer-thin Sheer-Grille with 0.6 mm perforations, magnetically attached
• Total frequency response of 33 Hz to 27 kHz with 89 dB sensitivity
• Rotating-cam mounting for secure, vibration-free installation in existing ceilings

Why a stereo ceiling speaker

Many rooms that deserve music cannot take a stereo pair. A small bathroom, a narrow hallway, a kitchen with cabinets on every wall or a bedroom with one sensible ceiling position all leave stereo imaging out of reach with ordinary speakers. The V6S solves that geometry problem by summing both channels into one enclosure while keeping the two tweeters separate, which preserves a sense of width that a simple mono speaker cannot give. In a larger room, two V6S units can be run as a conventional left and right pair, and in a theatre the surround mode lets a single unit cover a rear position where seating sits hard against the back wall. It is also a sensible Dolby Atmos and DTS:X overhead option when the layout calls for it.

Sound engineering

The 6.5-inch woofer uses Polk’s Dynamic Balance polypropylene cone, a lightweight design chosen for clean midrange and efficient bass output, with Klippel distortion optimisation applied to the motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension so the driver behaves at both background and party levels. The two silk dome tweeters sit on swivel mounts, which matters more in a ceiling than almost anywhere else: high frequencies are directional, and aiming the tweeters toward the seats rather than straight down at the floor restores clarity and imaging that fixed ceiling tweeters lose. With a total frequency response of 33 Hz to 27,000 Hz, usable limits of 50 Hz to 25,000 Hz at minus 3 dB, 8-ohm nominal impedance and 89 dB sensitivity, the V6S works comfortably with ordinary AV receivers and multi-room amplifiers.

Installation and finish

The Vanishing Series was designed to disappear. The Sheer-Grille is wafer-thin with ultra-fine 0.6 mm perforations, attaches magnetically and is acoustically inert, and it can be painted to match the ceiling so the speaker reads as a shadow line rather than a fitting. The grille diameter is 9.625 inches. Polk’s rotating-cam system clamps the speaker securely into the ceiling cut-out without vibration, in new construction or as a retrofit into an existing ceiling. Optional pre-construction brackets and a square grille are available separately for builds that need them. Keep the speaker clear of ceiling joists and services when marking the cut-out, wire both stereo inputs when running in stereo mode, and set the stereo/surround switch before the grille goes on.

For rooms that need real stereo from a single, nearly invisible ceiling position, the Polk Audio V6S brings full-range Polk sound to spaces a speaker pair cannot serve, and doubles as a flexible surround speaker when the system design calls for one.
