Denon DHT-S517 Soundbar Black

Denon DHT-S517 Soundbar Black – 3.1.2 Atmos With a Centre Channel and a Real Subwoofer

Most soundbars cut the same two corners: no true centre channel, so dialogue floats vaguely in the middle of a stereo wash, and bass from drivers too small to move air. The DHT-S517 refuses both. It is a 3.1.2 system – dedicated left, centre and right channels, two up-firing drivers for Dolby Atmos height effects, and a separate wireless subwoofer in the box – built by a company that has made AV receivers for decades and voices its bars accordingly.

Key features

• 3.1.2-channel configuration with dedicated centre channel
• Dolby Atmos decoding with up-firing height drivers
• Wireless subwoofer included for genuine low-frequency weight
• Denon Dialogue Enhancer for clearer speech at any volume
• HDMI eARC connection plus optical and analogue inputs
• Bluetooth streaming for music from phones and tablets
• Movie, Music and Night sound modes
• Wall-mountable or tabletop placement, remote control included

The centre channel is the story

Dialogue is mixed to the centre channel, and systems without one have to fake it – usually by smearing voices across the stereo image where music and effects compete with them. The S517’s dedicated centre driver, reinforced by Denon’s Dialogue Enhancer, keeps speech locked to the screen and intelligible at low volume. It is the difference between following a film and following most of it.

Atmos height and subwoofer depth

Up-firing drivers bounce Atmos height cues off the ceiling so rain falls, aircraft pass overhead and scores open up vertically. Underneath, the wireless subwoofer – placeable anywhere within reach of a power socket – supplies the low end that slim bars physically cannot: explosions with body, scores with foundation, music with a bottom octave. Together they make the S517 a system, not a speaker accessory.

Simple to live with

One HDMI eARC cable carries TV audio and lets the television remote control volume. Bluetooth covers music nights, Night Mode tames dynamics for late viewing, and the bar can sit on the furniture or mount on the wall. Setup is measured in minutes, which is exactly what a soundbar should demand.

For viewers who want real Atmos, real dialogue and real bass without assembling a receiver and five speakers, the DHT-S517 is Denon’s most complete shortcut.
