Flat response, and why it changes your work

Desktop speakers usually boost bass and treble to sound exciting in a shop. That boost hides exactly the areas a producer or editor needs to judge: muddy low-mids disappear into the extra bass, and dull recordings sound artificially bright. The MR3’s flat tuning, helped by the dimpled waveguide around its tweeter that smooths and extends the high-frequency response, gives an honest picture instead. Mixes translate better to headphones, cars and televisions, and dialogue edits are judged on the voice itself.

Room compensation for real desks

Small monitors live against walls, in corners and on reflective desktops, and each placement changes the bass and lower midrange. The MR3 provides several acoustic compensation settings — some on the rear panel, with further options in the Edifier ConneX app — that trim the response to suit the placement, including compensation for desktop reflections. Spending a few minutes on these settings does more for accuracy than any cable upgrade.

Connections for work and for downtime

For production, the balanced TRS inputs connect to an audio interface or mixer with the noise rejection balanced lines provide around computers. RCA and AUX inputs take a direct feed from a PC, console or phone, and the front headphone socket allows quick private checks without reaching behind anything. Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint covers the rest of life: reference tracks from a phone, videos and casual listening. A single front knob handles power, volume and mode switching.

Size, output and placement

With peak output of 92.5 dB at one metre, the pair is sized for nearfield work — roughly an arm’s length to a metre and a half — and will fill a small room at comfortable levels for general listening. The MDF cabinets keep resonance and distortion down. Bass below the 3.5-inch driver’s reach is necessarily limited; that is the honest trade of any monitor this size, and it is preferable to false, boosted bass when the goal is accurate work.
