The Edifier T5 is a powered subwoofer built to give bookshelf speakers and home theatre systems the low-frequency foundation they cannot produce on their own. A built-in 70W RMS amplifier drives an 8-inch long-throw front-firing woofer, extending the response down to 38Hz so film effects, electronic music and the bottom octaves of acoustic instruments carry real weight. An adjustable low-pass filter and a phase switch let you blend the T5 with almost any main speakers, and stereo RCA inputs and outputs make it easy to insert into a system, including powered speakers with a sub out. The thick MDF cabinet keeps enclosure resonance out of the sound.

Bass performance

Small and medium bookshelf speakers typically roll off somewhere between 55Hz and 70Hz. Everything below that — the rumble of a film soundtrack, the fundamental of a bass guitar’s lowest notes, the synth sub-bass in electronic music — is simply missing. The T5 fills that gap with a driver and amplifier designed only for low frequencies. The front-firing layout fires bass directly into the room, and the long-throw 8-inch cone moves enough air to give effects physical presence in small and medium rooms without the strain that comes from an undersized driver being pushed too hard. With a signal-to-noise ratio of 85dB(A) or better, the T5 stays quiet between passages.

Dialling in the crossover and phase

Good subwoofer integration is about the handover. The T5’s low-pass filter is adjustable across the bass range (50Hz to 150Hz), so you set the point where the subwoofer takes over from your main speakers: lower for large floorstanders, higher for compact satellites. The phase switch flips output between 0 and 180 degrees so the subwoofer’s wavefront arrives in step with the main speakers at your listening position; the correct setting is simply the one that sounds fuller at the crossover point. A volume control on the unit sets the subwoofer’s level against the rest of the system. Take ten minutes over these three controls and the subwoofer disappears as a separate box, leaving a single, larger-sounding system.

Connections and placement

Connection is by stereo RCA. Use the sub out or pre-out of an AV receiver, amplifier or powered speaker, or feed a line-level source into the T5 and pass it on to powered speakers through the T5’s RCA line output. The cabinet measures 278 x 300 x 336 mm, compact enough to sit beside a media unit or under a desk. Floor placement near a wall adds natural reinforcement if you want more output; moving it out into the room tightens the sound. Automatic standby switches the amplifier to a low-power state when the music stops.
