Sonos Five Smart Speaker – White

Sonos Five (White) – The Flagship Sonos Speaker, Built Purely for Music

The Sonos Five is the largest and most powerful speaker in the Sonos range, designed for listeners who want a single wireless speaker to behave like a serious hi-fi system. Inside the sealed cabinet, six Class-D amplifiers drive three midwoofers and three tweeters in a phased array: a centre tweeter dedicated to vocal clarity, two angled side tweeters for width, and three high-excursion woofers that produce the deep, controlled bass this model is known for.

This is the white finish, a clean matte look that sits comfortably in bright, modern rooms. The Five streams over Wi-Fi from the Sonos app and Apple AirPlay 2, tunes itself to the room with Trueplay, and still leaves room for older sources through a 3.5 mm line-in. It is a music-first speaker, deliberately without the compromises of a soundbar or a small smart speaker.

A stereo speaker in one box, a system in two

Place a single Five horizontally and its angled tweeters and phased array separate left and right channels convincingly from one cabinet, which makes it a complete stereo system for a shelf or sideboard. Stand it vertically and it becomes a mono speaker, ready to be paired with a second Five. In a stereo pair, each speaker handles one channel properly, and the result is a wide, detailed soundstage that competes with component hi-fi at similar money. Trueplay tuning, measured with an iOS device, keeps either arrangement balanced against walls, corners and furniture.

Sources and everyday use

Streaming is handled through the Sonos app, which brings together the major music and radio services, or directly over AirPlay 2 from Apple devices. The line-in is the thoughtful extra: connect a turntable with a built-in or external phono stage, a CD player or a television, and that source can also be shared to other Sonos speakers around the home. Capacitive touch controls on the cabinet handle play, pause and volume without reaching for a phone, and an Ethernet port is there if your Wi-Fi is unreliable.

Who the Sonos Five suits

Choose the Five if music quality is the priority and you want the best single speaker Sonos makes: for a main listening room, a large kitchen or a home office where a full separates system is impractical. Start with one, and add a second later for true stereo. Buyers wanting voice control built in or a battery for portability should look at other Sonos models; the Five is a plug-in speaker that spends its budget entirely on sound.
