Sonos Arc Ultra – Sound Motion, 9.1.4 Atmos and a New Flagship, black

The Arc Ultra is Sonos’s flagship soundbar, finished here in black, and it is built around a world-first transducer technology called Sound Motion: a compact four-motor, dual-diaphragm woofer that moves twice the air of its predecessor’s design, giving the bar real bass authority of its own. Around it, fourteen drivers render Dolby Atmos in up to 9.1.4 channels from a single enclosure.

Sonos redesigned the Arc Ultra’s architecture end to end – a wraparound grille, centre channel with enhanced dialogue processing, and Trueplay tuning that now works with both iOS and Android. Speech Enhancement, adjustable in the Sonos app, targets the complaint every household shares: voices buried under effects.

Sound Motion, explained

Bass from a soundbar is normally limited by physics: small drivers in a shallow cabinet cannot move much air, so bars lean on a separate subwoofer. Sound Motion attacks that limit directly, using four motors to drive dual diaphragms in a force-cancelling arrangement that doubles the excursion available in the space. The Arc Ultra consequently plays lower and louder on its own than the original Arc – films carry weight before any subwoofer joins, and music gains a foundation most single bars lack.

Part of the Sonos system

The Arc Ultra is also a Sonos zone: it streams the household’s services over Wi-Fi, groups with other rooms, and expands into a full theatre with a Sonos Sub (Gen 3 or Sub 4) and Era 100 or Era 300 rear speakers. Trueplay measures the room and corrects the bar’s response, and the Sonos app handles everything from EQ to surround levels. Upgrading is incremental – the bar is complete on day one and grows when the room does.

Who the Arc Ultra suits

Choose the Arc Ultra for the main television in a living room or media space where the best single-bar experience is the brief, especially in homes already invested in Sonos. The black finish suits dedicated media rooms and darker cabinetry. Add the Sub when films become the priority; the bar will be ready.

Everyday control

Control lives where you already are: the television remote over HDMI-CEC for volume, the Sonos app for grouping, EQ and Speech Enhancement, and voice for hands-free requests. The bar’s touch surface handles the basics on the unit itself.
