Focal Dome Flax 5.1 Speaker Pack with Sub Air

The Focal Dome Pack 5.1 is a compact home cinema speaker system built around five identical Dome Flax satellite speakers and the Sub Air wireless subwoofer. Each satellite is a small lacquered aluminium enclosure, roughly the size of a grapefruit, that can sit on furniture, mount on a wall or ceiling, or stand on optional supports, which makes the system practical in living rooms where full-size speakers will not fit. Focal builds the satellite around its Flax cone technology, a sandwich diaphragm using natural flax fibre, developed for its larger French-made loudspeakers.

Satellite design

Each Dome Flax satellite is a two-way sealed design combining the 4-inch Flax mid-bass driver with a 1-inch aluminium magnesium inverted dome tweeter, crossed over at 2,500 Hz. Frequency response runs from 80 Hz to 28 kHz, sensitivity is 88 dB and nominal impedance is 8 ohms, with a recommended amplifier power of 25 to 100 watts per channel from the AV receiver driving the system. Because all five satellites are identical, pans and effects keep the same tonal character as they move around the room, and the centre channel is a true match for the fronts rather than a smaller compromise.

The Sub Air subwoofer

Low frequencies are handled by the Sub Air, a flat bass-reflex subwoofer using an 8-inch woofer and 150 W BASH amplification. Its frequency response covers 40 Hz to 200 Hz, with a variable crossover between 50 Hz and 200 Hz, phase adjustment and LFE input. The wireless link, with a range of around 15 metres in a room, removes the long subwoofer cable run that usually dictates placement; the flat cabinet, 410 x 360 x 160 mm, can stand against a wall, sit on the floor or mount flat where a conventional cube subwoofer would not fit.

Placement and setup

The satellites are designed to disappear into a room: on a shelf beside the screen, fixed to a wall, or angled from a ceiling position toward the seats. Their small footprint, 172 x 144 x 143 mm and 1.9 kg each, makes positioning straightforward, and the built-in articulation helps aim them correctly. In the receiver setup, the satellites should be configured as small speakers with a crossover around the point where the Sub Air takes over, so bass management sends the low content to the subwoofer as the system intends.

What the system suits

Focal positions the Dome range for rooms of roughly 30 to 40 square metres, which covers most apartment and family living spaces. The system needs a multichannel AV receiver, which is not included; the satellites are passive and the subwoofer connects to the receiver’s subwoofer output through its wireless emitter. For film and television viewing where the speakers must share space with everyday living, the pack offers genuine Focal driver technology in a format that takes up almost no floor area.

Five identical Flax satellites and a wireless flat subwoofer make this a considered answer to a common problem: proper 5.1 sound in a room that cannot accommodate five full-size speakers.
