The Polk Audio Signature Elite ES50 is the compact floorstanding speaker in the Signature Elite range, sold here as a pair. Each tower combines two 5.25-inch Dynamic Balance mica-reinforced polypropylene drivers with a 1-inch Terylene high-resolution dome tweeter in a 2.5-way cascaded crossover array. It is Hi-Res Audio Certified, with a total frequency response of 42 Hz to 40 kHz, and its slim cabinet is intended for small to medium rooms where a larger tower would dominate the space.

Dynamic Balance and the Cascaded Array

Polk’s Dynamic Balance process analyses the moving system of a driver as a whole and selects materials and geometry that reduce resonance before it colours the sound. In the ES50 the two woofers do not simply duplicate each other. Arranged as a cascaded crossover array, both drivers handle the bass while only the upper driver continues through the midrange. That arrangement keeps voices clear and centred, widens the area over which the tonal balance stays consistent, and gives a slim tower more low-frequency capability than its driver size alone would suggest.

Power Port Bass

A conventional rear or down-firing port can produce audible turbulence when it works hard. Polk’s Power Port design shapes the airflow as it leaves the cabinet so the transition into the room is smoother, reducing port noise and distortion. The audible result aimed for is bass that is louder and more musical rather than boomy, together with a more open midrange, because the port is not adding noise of its own over the frequencies above it.

High-Resolution Treble

The 1-inch Terylene dome tweeter is certified for high-resolution audio and extends the response to 40 kHz. That extension is not about hearing 40 kHz directly; a tweeter that stays controlled well beyond the audible band keeps its in-band performance cleaner, which matters with high-resolution recordings and detailed film soundtracks. The anti-diffraction magnetic grilles are shaped to minimise interference with that dispersion when they are left in place for everyday use.

Amplifiers and Placement

At 89 dB sensitivity and with compatibility for 4 ohm and 8 ohm outputs, the ES50 works with a wide range of AV receivers and stereo amplifiers, with a recommended power range of 20 to 150 watts per channel. The dual binding posts allow bi-wiring or bi-amping where an amplifier supports it. As a floorstanding pair it suits front left and right positions in a home theatre, or a dedicated two-channel music system in a room of modest size.
