The Bose DesignMax DM6SE is a surface-mount loudspeaker from Bose Professional’s DesignMax family, supplied here as a pair in white. It is the outdoor-rated model in its size class, combining a 6.5-inch woofer with a coaxially mounted tweeter in an IP55 enclosure that can be installed on exterior walls as readily as inside a commercial space.

Sound and coverage

Mounting the tweeter coaxially inside the woofer keeps the sound coming from a single point, which helps intelligibility as listeners move through the space. Coverage is a wide 125-degree conical pattern both horizontally and vertically, so fewer loudspeakers are needed to cover a terrace, atrium or retail floor evenly. Frequency response is quoted at 70 Hz to 20,000 Hz at minus 3 dB, extending to 59 Hz at minus 10 dB. The passive crossover works at 1.7 kHz, and Bose recommends a 60 Hz high-pass filter at 24 dB per octave to protect the driver at high levels.

Power and system design

Nominal impedance is 8 ohms with the transformer bypassed. On a 100-volt line the available taps are 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 watts plus bypass; on 70-volt systems the taps run from 2.5 to 80 watts. That flexibility lets an installer set relative levels across zones from the loudspeaker itself. Bose notes that no signal processing is required, while its own DSP and amplifier platforms can apply loudspeaker EQ voicing and SmartBass processing for improved low-level performance. Overload protection uses a resistor network with automatic reset.

Construction and installation

The enclosure uses engineered plastics chosen for UV fade resistance, with a powder-coated perforated aluminium grille that is tamper-resistant and paintable, and a rotatable, removable logo so the badge can be aligned in either orientation. The operating temperature range is minus 25 to plus 70 degrees Celsius. Connection is by a rear six-pin Euroblock connector with loop-through, accepting 18 to 14 AWG cable. Each loudspeaker measures 340 x 222 x 229 mm, or 245 mm deep with the bracket, and weighs 5.9 kg including the grille.

Where it fits

DesignMax models are intended to be mixed across a project, and the DM6SE is the choice where a zone needs more level and low-frequency weight than the smaller surface models provide: hospitality terraces, retail exteriors, transport and leisure spaces, and foreground music areas indoors. Its white finish and low-profile grille suit light-coloured architecture.

Specified as a pair in white, the DM6SE covers a single zone or a section of a larger distributed system. Confirm amplifier tap settings and cable runs for the whole design before installation, because level balance across zones depends on those choices as much as on the loudspeakers themselves.
