Definitive Technology DI5.5 – In-Wall LCR Speaker That Disappears Into the Room

The DI 5.5LCR is an in-wall loudspeaker built for the three hardest-working positions in a home theatre: left, centre and right. Instead of three boxes standing under the screen, each speaker mounts inside the wall itself, leaving only a slim grille sitting almost flat against the surface. Two 5.25-inch BDSS mid/woofers sit either side of a pivoting 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter, a layout chosen to keep dialogue locked to the screen while covering wide seating with even, controlled sound.

It suits dedicated theatre rooms, media walls and living spaces where the interior matters as much as the picture. Because one model covers left, centre and right duties, the front soundstage stays tonally consistent as effects pan across the screen. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally, which makes it a practical answer when a conventional centre speaker will not fit beneath a large television or a projection screen.

Key features

• Dual 5.25-inch BDSS mid/woofers deliver extended excursion from a compact in-wall frame
• 1-inch pure aluminium dome tweeter pivots to aim high frequencies at the seats
• Hidden-flange design keeps the mounting frame concealed behind the grille
• Micro-perforated grille sits nearly flush and can be painted to match the wall
• Balanced Double Surround System supports each cone at its inner and outer edges
• One model handles left, centre and right positions for a matched front stage
• Shallow mounting depth suits standard stud-wall cavities
• Wide, even dispersion keeps off-axis seats clear and intelligible
• Timbre matched with other Definitive Technology Disappearing Series speakers

Sound performance

The BDSS drivers support the cone with surrounds at both edges, allowing a relatively small driver to move more air with better control than a conventional design of the same size. In practice that means firmer bass and a cleaner midrange than most in-wall speakers manage, so voices carry weight and film scores keep their body. The aluminium tweeter is mounted in a shaped housing that works as a low-diffraction waveguide, and because it pivots, the installer can direct the treble toward the listening area rather than letting placement dictate the result.

In-wall installation

Each speaker needs a rectangular cutout of roughly 365 by 165 mm, with about 79 mm of mounting depth inside the wall and a total depth of 92 mm. Rotating clamp fixings pull the frame tight against the plasterboard, and the grille then covers the frame completely. The speaker is sold individually, so a front stage uses three units, and matching Disappearing Series models can cover surround and height positions in the same system.

Design and build

The mounting flange is only about 2.5 mm thick and the grille stands roughly 3.5 mm proud of the wall, so once it is painted the speaker all but vanishes. A cloth scrim behind the micro-perforations hides the dark driver assembly from view while letting sound pass with minimal obstruction. Build quality is aimed at install-and-forget service, with a rigid frame that avoids rattles and resonances.

Choose the DI 5.5LCR if you want a front stage that sounds like proper home theatre but looks like a plain wall. It is best suited to buyers building a discreet system around an AV receiver, where a clean media wall and reclaimed floor space matter as much as dialogue clarity and scale.
