Definitive Technology DW-65 In-Wall Speaker

The DW-65 is the 6.5-inch two-way in-wall speaker in Definitive Technology’s Dymension CI architectural series – the range designed to put Definitive’s home-theatre sound into walls without leaving a visible speaker in the room. A light, rigid 6.5-inch mineral-filled polypropylene woofer handles bass and midrange, while the 1-inch aluminium oxide dome tweeter pivots, so high frequencies can be aimed at the seating position even when the speaker has to sit off to one side of it.

An integrated frame and baffle, a micro-perforated magnetic grille that can be painted to match the wall, and a flush border-free design make the finished installation close to invisible. The IP55 rating extends placement options to humid rooms – kitchens, bathrooms – and covered outdoor areas.

Key Features

• 6.5-inch mineral-filled woofer with premium crossover network
• Pivoting 1-inch aluminium oxide dome tweeter
• IP55-rated for humid and covered outdoor locations
• Toolless installation with pivoting dog-arm clamps
• Flush, border-free frame with paintable magnetic grille
• Timbre-matched with the wider Dymension and Mythos families

Aiming a Tweeter, Why It Helps

High frequencies travel in a narrower beam than bass. A fixed in-wall tweeter fires straight out of the wall, so listeners seated off-axis hear a duller balance. The DW-65’s pivoting tweeter tilts toward the listening area, restoring treble detail and imaging where people actually sit – particularly valuable for front left/right positions flanking a large screen, where the speakers end up wide of the audience.

Planning the Installation

The DW-65 needs a 201 x 316mm cut-out and about 93mm of clear depth behind the surface. During new construction, pre-construction brackets reserve the openings and route cables before plasterboard goes up; in finished rooms, the frame drops into the cut-out and the pivoting dog arms clamp it in place without tools. Spring-post terminals take bare speaker wire, and the magnetic grille snaps on last – it can be painted before or after fitting, so the speaker can be colour-matched to the finished wall rather than the other way around.

Where the DW-65 Fits

Front and surround channels in in-wall home theatres, stereo pairs in living spaces that must stay visually clean, and distributed audio in kitchens and covered patios. Full technical specifications are in the Additional Information table on this page.
