The MX 1723 is a bare 3.5 mm 4-pole stereo plug – the connector itself, with solder terminals, for making your own cables or repairing damaged ones. Four poles (tip, two rings and sleeve, the TRRS layout) carry left audio, right audio, ground and the microphone/control channel, which is why this is the plug used on phone headsets and any cable that must carry a mic signal as well as sound.

When a Bare Connector Is the Right Answer

Most headphone and aux cables fail at the plug, not in the middle: the moulded strain relief gives up after thousands of bends and one channel starts cutting out. A low-wattage iron and a steady hand are all the tooling required.
