Sennheiser MKS 4 Shock Mount

The Sennheiser MKS 4 is the elastic-suspension shock mount designed for the MK 4 and MK 8 large-diaphragm studio condenser microphones. The microphone floats inside the mount on elastic suspension instead of being clamped rigidly to the stand, so footfalls, desk thumps, stand bumps and floor vibration are absorbed before they can travel up the stand and into the recording as low-frequency rumble.

Its defining detail is the open ring: unlike fully enclosed shock mounts that hold the microphone back inside a cage, the MKS 4 leaves the front open, so the microphone can be positioned close to the sound source. For vocal recording that means working close to the capsule for presence and controlled proximity effect without the mount’s frame fouling the pop filter or the singer’s position.

Why a shock mount matters

Large-diaphragm condensers are sensitive enough to hear everything, including the building. A singer tapping a foot, a mic stand knocked mid-take, or traffic vibration through a floor all arrive at the capsule as rumble that EQ cannot remove without thinning the voice. Suspending the microphone on elastic decouples it mechanically from the stand, which is why a proper shock mount is standard practice in professional studios even when the microphone itself has internal capsule isolation, as the MK 4 does: the two layers of isolation handle different paths of vibration.
