The Polk Audio Monitor XT30 is the centre channel speaker of the Monitor XT series, built for the channel that does the hardest work in a home theatre. Dialogue first

Polk’s Dynamic Balance driver design analyses the whole electro-acoustic system to remove resonances before they colour the sound, and in a centre speaker that discipline is aimed squarely at the human voice. The twin 5.25-inch woofers share the work of the midrange and upper bass, so dialogue stays full and intelligible even when an action scene piles effects on top of it. The crossover hands over to the tweeter at 2,500 Hz, keeping the critical presence region coherent, and the rear port adds low-end weight that helps male voices and on-screen effects sound substantial rather than thin.

Hi-Res Audio certified treble

The 1-inch Terylene dome tweeter is the same design used across the Monitor XT range, and it carries the speaker’s response out to 40 kHz, beyond the range of human hearing. That extension earns the XT30 its Hi-Res Audio certification and matters in the audible band too: a tweeter that is comfortable at the top of its range sounds airy and unstrained on cymbals, strings and the fine detail in modern film mixes, including the spatial height content in Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks played through compatible receivers.

Matching the Monitor XT system

A centre speaker must disappear into the front soundstage, matching the left and right speakers so closely that a voice panning across the screen never changes character. The XT30 uses the same tweeter, the same woofer materials and the same voicing as the Monitor XT towers and bookshelf models, so it locks into a system built from XT60, XT70, XT15 or XT20 fronts. It is equally at home completing an existing pair of Polk speakers, and it works with 4-ohm and 8-ohm amplifier outputs, with a minimum impedance of 4.1 ohms.

Placement and practicalities

At 482.6 mm wide, 165.1 mm high and 206.6 mm deep, and weighing 5.9 kg, the XT30 sits on a TV stand or a shelf above or below the screen without overwhelming it, and the supplied feet keep it stable. Aim it at ear height towards the main seats, run your receiver’s room calibration, and give the rear port a little breathing room from the wall behind it. It is finished in matte black to sit unobtrusively under a screen, with a removable grille for a cleaner look.
