Description
JBL 305P MkII Studio Monitor
The JBL 305P MkII is a powered two-way nearfield studio monitor, sold singly, and it has become a default first serious monitor for home and project studios. Each speaker combines a 5-inch long-throw woofer with a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter in JBL’s patented Image Control Waveguide, driven by its own 41 W Class D amplifier. The design borrows technology developed for JBL’s flagship M2 Master Reference Monitor and the 7 Series, and applies it to a compact cabinet that sits comfortably on a desk or meter bridge.
A studio monitor has one job: to tell the truth about a mix so that the mix travels well to other speakers, headphones, cars and phones. The 305P MkII is tuned for that job, with a neutral, detailed presentation, a wide sweet spot and room-adjustment controls on the rear panel. This listing is for a single monitor; buyers building a stereo system should plan for two units plus balanced cables from an audio interface or mixer.
Key features
- Powered two-way design, bi-amplified with 41 W to the woofer and 41 W to the tweeter
- 5-inch (127 mm) woofer and 1-inch (25 mm) soft-dome tweeter
- Image Control Waveguide for a wide, detailed soundstage and stable imaging
- Frequency response 49 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB; extension to 43 Hz at minus 10 dB
- Maximum peak SPL of 108 dB, with 94 dB continuous
- Balanced XLR and 6.3 mm TRS inputs with plus 4 dBu / minus 10 dBV sensitivity switch
- Boundary EQ and HF Trim controls to adapt the monitor to the room
- Sold as a single monitor for stereo pairs, surround builds or single-speaker checks
Why the waveguide matters
On many small monitors the image collapses unless your head sits in one exact spot, which makes mixing tiring and misleading. The Image Control Waveguide shapes the tweeter’s output so the transition between woofer and tweeter stays smooth across a broad listening area, giving 120 degrees of horizontal and 90 degrees of vertical coverage. Instruments keep their positions as you move, stereo width is easy to judge and reverb tails remain audible. For producers who share a desk, edit video as well as audio, or simply lean back while listening, that wider, more forgiving sweet spot is the feature they notice every day.
Honest sound in a small cabinet
The 5-inch woofer uses a long-throw design and JBL’s Slip Stream port tuning to produce more low-frequency output than its size suggests, reaching down to 43 Hz at the minus 10 dB point. That covers the fundamentals of most instruments, though electronic producers working with deep sub-bass can add the matching JBL LSR310S subwoofer later. The crossover at 1725 Hz uses a 4th-order acoustic Linkwitz-Riley design for a smooth handover between drivers. The cabinet is 15 mm MDF with an injection-moulded ABS baffle, finished in matte black, measuring 298 x 185 x 231 mm and weighing 4.73 kg.
Set-up and room controls
Place a pair at ear level, angled towards the listening position in an equilateral triangle, and the 305P MkII rewards the effort immediately. Two rear-panel tools then adapt it to the room. Boundary EQ applies a low-frequency shelf at 50 Hz with 0, minus 1.5 or minus 3 dB settings, taming the bass build-up that comes from placing monitors on a desk or near a wall. HF Trim adjusts the treble by plus or minus 2 dB to suit reflective or heavily furnished rooms. Inputs accept balanced XLR or TRS cables, and the sensitivity switch matches professional plus 4 dBu equipment or consumer minus 10 dBV sources.
Choose the 305P MkII if you produce, mix, edit or podcast at a desk and want a proven powered monitor with detailed imaging, useful room controls and sound that stays consistent as you move. It is the 5-inch starting point of JBL’s 3 Series MkII range, with larger 6.5-inch and 8-inch siblings sharing the same design language.
