Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair)
The Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 is a compact two-way bass-reflex bookshelf speaker, supplied as a pair, and the smaller standmount model in the second-generation Debut series designed by Andrew Jones. It was engineered as a complete redesign of the original Debut B5, with new custom drivers, a revised crossover and a larger, internally braced cabinet, while keeping the proportions that suit desks, shelves and smaller listening rooms. For stereo listening where space is limited, or as surround channels in a larger Debut 2.0 theatre system, the B5.2 delivers the series’ design priorities at the most compact size.
ELAC specifies a frequency response of 46 Hz to 35,000 Hz, sensitivity of 86 dB at 2.83 volts at 1 metre and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, with a maximum power input of 120 watts. That combination makes the B5.2 compatible with a wide range of integrated amplifiers, streaming amplifiers and AV receivers, without demanding high current or specialised speaker matching.
Key features
- 5.25-inch aramid-fibre woofer: Woven aramid-fibre cone with oversized magnet and vented pole piece for controlled, extended bass from a small cabinet.
- 1-inch cloth-dome tweeter: Silk-dome tweeter with wide-roll surround and wide-dispersion waveguide, with response extending to 35 kHz.
- Compact full-range design: 46 Hz to 35,000 Hz frequency response in a two-way bass-reflex enclosure.
- Front-firing port: Dual flared front port supports placement against walls or in bookshelves.
- Braced MDF cabinet: Thick CARB2-rated MDF construction, internally braced to reduce cabinet vibration.
- Amplifier friendly: 6 ohm nominal impedance, 86 dB sensitivity and 120 W maximum power input.
- 5-way binding posts: Metal posts accept bare wire, spade and banana connections.
Drivers and crossover
The 5.25-inch woofer uses ELAC’s woven aramid-fibre cone material, whose revised shape provides greater stiffness and damping than polypropylene or paper alternatives. In a driver of this size that translates into cleaner midrange and a low-frequency response that extends further than the cabinet dimensions suggest. The 1-inch cloth-dome tweeter features a wide-roll surround and sits in a waveguide that improves directivity control and removes the diffraction modes associated with plain box enclosures, broadening the area over which the tonal balance stays correct. A crossover frequency of 2,200 Hz hands over between the two drivers, keeping voices centred in the range where the ear is most sensitive to discontinuity.
Cabinet, port and placement
The cabinet is CARB2-rated MDF with a black ash vinyl finish, made larger than the original B5 cabinet and internally braced for stiffness and strength, which reduces the vibrations that colour the sound. The dual flared port is mounted on the front baffle, a change made specifically so the speaker can be placed against a wall or inside a bookshelf without compromising performance, a common constraint in real rooms that rear-ported compact speakers handle poorly. Each speaker measures 180 mm wide, 341 mm high and 234 mm deep and weighs 5.9 kg, light enough for wall brackets and shelves rated for the load, and compact enough for desktop stereo with nearfield listening.
System building and applications
In a two-channel system the B5.2 pair suits smaller rooms, desktop setups and secondary systems in bedrooms and studies, where its scale matches the space. In home theatre use it serves as front speakers in compact rooms or as surround speakers alongside larger Debut 2.0 models at the front, sharing aramid-fibre woofers and cloth-dome tweeters across the range for consistent voicing. Connection is via standard speaker cable to the 5-way metal binding posts, and the 6 ohm impedance presents no difficulty to mainstream amplification.
The B5.2 is the Debut 2.0 bookshelf speaker for listeners who need the smallest footprint in the range without giving up the redesigned drivers, braced cabinet and front-port flexibility that define the second generation.
