The Yamaha HS7 is a 2-way bi-amplified nearfield studio monitor built around a 6.5-inch cone woofer and a 1-inch dome tweeter. An honest sound, on purpose

Since the 1970s, Yamaha’s white-cone nearfield monitors have been a studio fixture for one reason: accuracy. The HS series continues that approach. Instead of boosting bass or treble to sound impressive on first listen, the HS7 is tuned for a flat, precise response, so the EQ, balance and effects decisions you make translate properly to other systems — headphones, car stereos, club PAs. If a mix has a problem, the HS7 shows it to you rather than covering it up, which is exactly what a reference monitor is for.

Fitting the monitors to your room

Most home and project studios place monitors close to a wall, and that builds up low frequencies. The HS7’s ROOM CONTROL switch attenuates everything below 500 Hz by 0, -2 or -4 dB to counter that build-up, while the HIGH TRIM switch adjusts the high-frequency shelf by +2 dB, 0 or -2 dB for rooms that sound dull or overly bright. Together with the rear LEVEL control, these switches let you set the pair up correctly on a desk, on stands or against a wall, with no extra processing in the chain.

Drivers and cabinet

The 6.5-inch woofer and 1-inch dome tweeter cross over at 2 kHz, each powered by its own dedicated amplifier stage so neither driver starves the other at high levels. The MDF cabinet is designed to suppress unwanted resonance, and the rear bass-reflex port keeps port noise low, so low-end detail stays readable at the moderate levels nearfield work calls for. At 210 mm wide and 8.2 kg per cabinet, the HS7 suits small to mid-size control rooms, editing suites and bedroom studios.

Connections

Each HS7 accepts a balanced XLR (XLR3-31 type) or balanced TRS phone input, so the pair connects directly to audio interfaces, mixers and monitor controllers with standard balanced cables. Set the LEVEL control to its centre click for the reference setting in a typical +4 dB studio chain.
