The BIC America Venturi V1020 is a down-firing powered subwoofer built around a 10-inch long-throw woofer and a built-in amplifier rated at 160 watts RMS continuous (350 watts dynamic peak). Its specified frequency response runs from 26 Hz to 180 Hz, deep enough to cover the LFE effects channel of movie soundtracks and the bottom octaves that small satellite and bookshelf speakers cannot reach. The cabinet uses BIC’s tuned “Venturi” vent in a vented (ported) enclosure, the design the Venturi series is named after.

Down-firing matters in two practical ways. The woofer fires into the floor, which loads the driver evenly and uses the room boundary to reinforce output, and the driver itself is protected from accidental kicks, pets and children’s fingers — a real consideration in a living room. A subsonic filter (18 dB/octave below 20 Hz) protects the woofer from inaudible ultra-low signals that would otherwise waste amplifier power and excursion.

Setting the crossover

The variable 40–180 Hz crossover lets the V1020 blend with almost any main speakers. With large floorstanders, a setting near 40–60 Hz lets the subwoofer handle only the deepest bass. With small satellite speakers, 100–150 Hz hands more of the range to the subwoofer so the satellites are not strained. When connected to an AV receiver’s LFE/subwoofer output, the receiver’s own bass management usually sets the crossover and the subwoofer’s control can be set high or bypassed in effect.

Placement notes from the manual

BIC’s guidance is straightforward: placement away from walls gives the least bass reinforcement, against a wall adds roughly 3 dB, and a corner adds about 6 dB over free-space placement. Because low bass waves are long, output also varies around the room — walking the room while music plays reveals the peaks and nulls, and small position changes are the cheapest tuning tool available.
