The Heco Victa Prime Sub 252 A is the active subwoofer of Heco’s Victa Prime series, designed to complete the range’s bookshelf and floorstanding speakers as a full home cinema system, and equally usable alongside other loudspeakers. A 260 mm long-throw woofer using Heco’s long-fibre kraft paper cone material is driven by an amplifier rated at 100 W RMS and 200 W maximum, in a bass-reflex cabinet. Heco’s specification gives a frequency range of 22 to 200 Hz, so the low rumbling sequences in film soundtracks are reproduced by a dedicated driver rather than asked of the main speakers.

Long-Fibre Kraft Paper Cone

Heco has used long-fibre kraft paper for woofer and bass-midrange cones across its ranges for many years, because the material combines low weight with a high level of internal damping. A light cone responds quickly, and natural damping suppresses the resonances that can colour the sound from thinner or harder cone materials. In a subwoofer, that combination supports bass that remains controlled and distinguishable — the difference between a kick drum, a bass guitar note and a film effect — rather than a single undifferentiated thump at high levels.

Cabinet Construction

The cabinet follows the visual concept of the Victa Prime series, with slightly rounded sides, and is built from layers of glued and moulded MDF panels to form a solid, low-resonance housing. A subwoofer cabinet is worked hard by its own driver: internal air pressure at low frequencies will excite a weak box into audible vibration, adding sound that was never in the recording. The layered MDF construction provides the stiffness and mass that keep the cabinet quiet, so the output the listener hears comes from the woofer and the two reflex ports, not from the enclosure itself.

Integration Controls

The Sub 252 A provides the adjustments needed to integrate a subwoofer properly. The crossover frequency is continuously variable, allowing the handover to be set where the main speakers roll off; level sets the subwoofer’s contribution relative to the rest of the system; and phase switching aligns its output with the main speakers at the listening position. Line-level input and output connections suit AV receivers and stereo amplifiers alike, and automatic switching turns the subwoofer on when a signal arrives and off again when the system falls silent.

Where the Sub 252 A Fits

The Sub 252 A is the matched low-frequency partner for Victa Prime stereo and surround systems in small to medium rooms, and a sensible addition to any home cinema whose main speakers stop short of the lowest octave. Heco advises keeping at least 20 cm between the subwoofer and walls or furniture so its reflex ports and output are not obstructed, and placing it near the front loudspeakers, in front of the listening position, as a starting point before fine-tuning by ear.
