Clear filtersBookshelf Speakers buying guide
Bookshelf speakers are the most flexible way to get real Hi-Fi sound in an Indian home. They are small enough to sit on a shelf, a desk, a TV unit or a pair of stands, yet a good pair will outperform almost any soundbar or all-in-one system for music. Our range runs from compact Edifier and JBL desktop speakers under ₹5,000 to Bowers & Wilkins 600 and 700 Series, ELAC, Q Acoustics, Polk Audio and Klipsch reference models used in serious stereo and home theatre systems.
What is a bookshelf speaker?
A bookshelf speaker is a compact speaker, usually with one tweeter for high frequencies and one woofer of 4 to 6.5 inches for mid-range and bass. The name comes from the size, not the placement: most bookshelf speakers actually sound best on stands, away from walls. They are used as a stereo pair for music, as front or surround speakers in a home theatre, or as computer and TV speakers.
Passive or active bookshelf speakers?
- Active (powered) bookshelf speakers have amplifiers inside. Many add Bluetooth, optical, USB, HDMI ARC and a phono input for turntables. Plug in and play. Ideal for first systems, desks and TV rooms.
- Passive bookshelf speakers need a separate stereo amplifier or AV receiver. They give better upgrade paths and usually better sound for the money at higher budgets.
- Studio monitors are a type of active bookshelf speaker tuned for accuracy in music production. See our Studio Monitors section if you mix or record.
How to choose the right pair
- Room size: 4 to 5-inch woofers suit desks and rooms under 120 sq ft. 6.5-inch woofers fill living rooms up to about 250 sq ft.
- Sensitivity: 87 dB or higher works well with modest amplifiers. Lower sensitivity speakers need more power.
- Port position: rear-ported speakers need space behind them. Front-ported or sealed designs work better close to a wall.
- Inputs (active models): check you have the connections you need: optical for TV, Bluetooth for phones, USB for computers, phono for vinyl.
- Finish and size: they will be visible in your room, so check dimensions and finishes.
Placement tips for better sound
- Place the speakers 6 to 8 feet apart and the same distance from your seat, forming a triangle.
- Angle them slightly toward your listening position ("toe-in") for a sharper stereo image.
- Raise them so the tweeters are at ear height. Proper speaker stands make a clear difference over a cabinet top.
- Keep them 20 to 30 cm from the back wall and away from corners to stop the bass booming.
- Add a subwoofer if you want deep bass for films or electronic music.
Bookshelf speakers in a home theatre
Bookshelf speakers make excellent front speakers in smaller rooms and are the standard choice for surround speakers in any 5.1 or 7.1 system. Choose surrounds from the same brand and series as your fronts so effects move smoothly around the room. Pair them with a matching centre speaker and a subwoofer, and power them with an AV receiver.

FAQs about Bookshelf Speakers
Are bookshelf speakers good enough for a living room?
For music in a room up to about 250 sq ft, yes. Larger bookshelf speakers with 6.5-inch woofers fill most Indian living rooms. For movies in a bigger room, add a subwoofer or look at tower speakers.
Do bookshelf speakers need an amplifier?
Passive bookshelf speakers need a stereo amplifier or AV receiver. Active or powered bookshelf speakers have the amplifier built in and connect directly to your phone, TV or computer.
Can I put bookshelf speakers on a bookshelf?
You can, but they usually sound better on stands. Inside a shelf the bass becomes boomy and the sound loses clarity. If you must use a shelf, choose front-ported or sealed speakers and pull them to the front edge.
Are bookshelf speakers sold as a pair?
Most are sold as a pair, but some brands price them each. The product title states "pair" or "each".
Should I add a subwoofer to bookshelf speakers?
For music, a good pair is often enough. For films, gaming and bass-heavy music, a subwoofer adds the deep bass that small cabinets cannot reproduce and lets the speakers play cleaner.
Which amplifier should I buy for bookshelf speakers?
Choose a stereo amplifier or AV receiver whose power covers the speaker's recommended range at its impedance. Our team can suggest a matching amplifier from Denon, Marantz or Onkyo.
What is the best bookshelf speaker under ₹50,000?
That depends on your room and music, but Bowers & Wilkins 607, ELAC and Q Acoustics models are popular choices. Visit our store or message us for a recommendation.
