Deftech Cs 9080

Definitive Technology CS-9080 – A Centre Channel With Its Own Powered Subwoofer

The CS-9080 is Definitive Technology’s flagship centre channel speaker, and it attacks the centre channel’s hardest problem – full-range dialogue authority – by building a powered subwoofer into the cabinet. An 8-inch powered woofer with a 10-inch passive bass radiator handles the low end, leaving the twin 5.25-inch BDSS midrange drivers and 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter to keep voices clear, present and locked to the screen.

Most centre speakers are small boxes asked to reproduce everything from whispered dialogue to orchestral scores. The CS-9080’s integrated 300-watt subwoofer section means male voices carry real chest weight, effects that pan through the centre hit with impact, and the speaker keeps its composure at cinema volumes.

Why the centre channel deserves a subwoofer

Roughly two-thirds of a film’s sound passes through the centre channel, yet in most systems it is the smallest speaker on the front stage, rolling off exactly where voices and effects need weight. The CS-9080 removes that mismatch. Its powered low end is generated in the centre cabinet itself, time-aligned with the midrange, so dialogue fundamentals and centre-panned effects arrive together. Intelligent Bass Control then lets you set how much of that weight the room hears, independent of your receiver’s crossover.

BDSS drivers and clarity at volume

Definitive’s Balanced Double Surround System supports the midrange cones at two points, allowing greater excursion with lower distortion. In practice the CS-9080 stays composed when a soundtrack gets loud and complex – the shout over the explosion, the line delivered through the score – because the drivers are still working linearly when ordinary centres begin to strain.

Who the CS-9080 suits

Choose the CS-9080 as the centre of a serious Definitive Technology theatre, particularly with BP9000-series towers, or as an upgrade centre for any large system where dialogue authority is the weak link. It needs shelf space and a power point for its amplifier; in return it removes the centre channel as a limiting factor.

Placement and system matching

Site the CS-9080 on a sturdy shelf or cabinet directly above or below the screen, angled toward ear height at the main seats, and connect both its speaker-level input from the receiver’s centre channel and its line-level feed for the powered subwoofer section as Definitive’s manual directs. Set the Intelligent Bass Control by ear with familiar dialogue: enough weight that voices sound human, not so much that the centre swells. Matched with BP9000 towers and bipolar surrounds, the front stage becomes a single instrument.
