The JBL 705i is the 5-inch install monitor in JBL Professional’s 7 Series Master Reference range, designed for broadcast, post-production and immersive audio rooms where monitoring must be accurate, scalable and easy to integrate. It is important to distinguish it from the self-powered 705P: the 705i is a passive, centrally amplified loudspeaker. Amplification and processing live in the equipment rack rather than inside each cabinet, which removes the need for a mains outlet at every speaker position and lets a system designer tune an entire multichannel room from one central location.

The 7 Series borrows its core technology from JBL’s flagship M2 Master Reference Monitor. A patent-pending Image Control Waveguide and next-generation transducers give the compact 705i detailed imaging, an extended frequency response and output that seems out of proportion to its size, making it a practical building block for stereo, 5.1, 7.1 and object-based immersive monitoring systems alike.

Driver technology

The 2409H high-frequency transducer uses a low-mass annular diaphragm design that reaches well beyond the audible band, with a published frequency range of 39 Hz to 36 kHz and a frequency response of 48 Hz to 23 kHz within 1.5 dB tolerances as listed by JBL. Working with the Image Control Waveguide and a sophisticated dividing network crossing over at 1.9 kHz, it produces a transparent transition between drivers and stable imaging across the listening area. Output is equally notable for a monitor of this size: maximum continuous SPL exceeds 101 dB at 1 metre, with peak SPL above 107 dB, measured over the 80 Hz to 20 kHz band.

Built for installed monitoring systems

In post and broadcast facilities, speakers often need to mount close to screens without obstructing sight lines. The 705i’s compact enclosure, measuring 267 mm high, 149 mm wide and 206 mm deep and weighing 4.08 kg, includes mounting points on the top, bottom and rear panels with a two-hole mounting pattern, so brackets can position it precisely around displays. The birch plywood enclosure is reinforced for mounting duty, and connection is via Phoenix terminals that accept 12-gauge speaker wire, suiting permanent installation wiring practice.

Central amplification and tuning

Because the 705i is centrally amplified, each speaker can be driven by a single amplifier channel or bi-amplified, and tuning can be applied centrally for room-to-room consistency across a facility. This architecture suits immersive rooms where a dozen or more channels must behave identically, and it keeps heat, weight and service access in the rack instead of distributed around the room.

Sold individually, the 705i lets engineers build exactly the channel count a room requires, from a compact stereo edit suite to a full immersive post stage, with the confidence that every position is voiced to the same Master Reference standard.
