The Sonos Beam (Gen 1) is the compact soundbar that brought Sonos home theatre to smaller rooms: a 65cm bar with four full-range woofers, one tweeter and three passive radiators, driven by five Class-D amplifiers, connecting to the TV over HDMI ARC. It made dialogue-led TV sound, music streaming and built-in voice control (Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant) available in a single, shelf-friendly unit, and it remains fully supported in the Sonos system today.
Beam is the step into Sonos home cinema for bedrooms, apartments and secondary TVs: dramatically better than TV speakers, expandable later with a Sonos subwoofer and rear speakers for true 5.1, and a full music streamer in its own right over Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2. This listing is the Black finish of the first-generation Beam (model S14).

Small bar, real home theatre path
Beam’s driver array is arranged to do two jobs: precise centre-imaging for dialogue — helped by the dedicated tweeter — and enough radiated energy, via the passive radiators, to give films weight in rooms where a separate subwoofer is not yet in the plan. Speech Enhancement lifts dialogue further when a mix buries it, and Night Sound compresses dynamics so action scenes stop waking the house.
Voice and music, built in
With Alexa and Google Assistant onboard, Beam answers questions, controls smart-home devices and plays music hands-free, then returns to TV duty automatically. As a Sonos speaker it groups with the rest of the house, streams every major service through the Sonos app, and accepts AirPlay 2 from Apple devices. The far-field microphone array can be muted from the top panel when privacy matters.
Setup and expansion
HDMI ARC gives one-cable connection and TV-remote volume control; the included optical adapter covers TVs without ARC. Trueplay tunes the bar to the room with an iPhone, and wall mounting is supported with the optional bracket. When the room grows, add a Sub or Sub Mini and a pair of Sonos rears and Beam becomes the centre of a genuine 5.1 system.
For smaller rooms that want the complete Sonos proposition — TV clarity, music streaming, voice control and an upgrade path — the first-generation Beam in Black remains a smart, well-priced way in.
