Elac IC VT61W

Elac IC VT61W – Angled In-Ceiling Speaker for Home Theatre

The ELAC IC-VT61-W is a two-way in-ceiling speaker from the Vertex I series, designed for home theatre use. Most ceiling speakers fire straight down, which is fine for background music but places dialogue and effects above the picture. The IC-VT61-W instead puts its woofer and tweeter in a dedicated angled baffle, so sound is directed toward the listening area. That improves imaging and keeps effects tied to the screen, which is what a theatre ceiling channel needs to do.

The speaker pairs a 6.5-inch polypropylene cone woofer with a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter, crossed over at 3,000 Hz by a custom multi-element crossover using audiophile-grade components. ELAC rates the frequency response from 45 Hz to 20,000 Hz, with a sensitivity of 90 dB at 2.83 V/1 m and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms. Recommended amplifier power is 30 to 120 watts, with nominal power handling of 50 watts and peak handling of 120 watts, so it partners comfortably with typical AV receivers.

Key features

• Two-way in-ceiling theatre speaker from the ELAC Vertex I series
• Angled driver baffle directs sound toward the listening position for clearer imaging
• 6.5-inch polypropylene cone woofer for controlled low and mid frequencies
• 1-inch soft-dome tweeter for smooth, extended high frequencies
• Custom multi-element crossover at 3,000 Hz for a smooth transition between drivers
• Frequency response of 45 Hz to 20,000 Hz
• Sensitivity of 90 dB at 2.83 V/1 m, easy to drive
• Nominal impedance of 6 ohms, suited to AV receivers rated for 30 to 120 watts
• Power handling of 50 watts nominal and 120 watts peak
• Metal magnetic grille that is paintable to match the ceiling, over a black baffle

Why the angled baffle matters

In a theatre layout, ceiling speakers often handle front height, centre-adjacent or effects duties where direction is important. A conventional flush ceiling speaker spreads that energy across the floor, and the listener hears it as coming from overhead rather than from the screen. By angling both drivers together in one module, the IC-VT61-W aims the full frequency range at the seats. Voices stay intelligible, pans track the picture more convincingly, and the soundstage holds together at normal listening levels.

Installation and finish

The speaker has an overall diameter of 10.4 inches (265 mm) and needs a cutout of 9.52 inches (242 mm), with a mounting depth of 6.81 inches (173 mm), so ceiling void depth should be checked before installation. A cutout template and manual are included in the box. Once fitted, the low-profile metal grille attaches magnetically and can be painted to match the ceiling finish, leaving the installation discreet. The black baffle and white grille finish suits most interiors before painting.

System matching

With its 6-ohm impedance and 90 dB sensitivity, the IC-VT61-W works with a wide range of AV receivers without demanding high power. It can serve across the front stage where ceiling mounting is preferred, or as part of a larger Vertex-based installation where consistent voicing matters, since ELAC designs the crossover and drivers as a matched set.

For home theatres that need ceiling speakers to do more than fill the room with background sound, the IC-VT61-W is the purposeful option in the Vertex I range: an angled, aimable design with the driver quality and crossover care to keep theatre sound focused where the audience is sitting.
