Why Architectural Systems Need a Subwoofer

In-wall and in-ceiling satellite speakers are deliberately compact, and compact drivers in shallow enclosures cannot move enough air to reproduce the lowest octaves. Models in the Q Install range, such as the Qi65 and Qi80 speakers, are specified with low-frequency limits well above the region where film effects, kick drums and bass lines carry their weight. The Qi Sub 80SP exists to fill exactly that gap. Its 8-inch driver, working in the wall cavity, reproduces the region the satellites roll off, so film effects land with physical impact, music gains its foundation, and the satellites themselves can be crossed over at a point where they play cleanly instead of straining at frequencies they were not built for.

Passive Design, System Flexibility

Because the Sub 80SP is passive, the amplification and crossover live with the system electronics rather than inside the wall. That keeps heat and electronics out of the wall cavity, lets the installer choose an amplifier that suits the room and the rest of the system, and means the crossover and level can be set from the receiver or processor where the rest of the system’s bass management already lives. The 8-ohm impedance and 88 dB sensitivity keep the load straightforward for amplifiers in the specified 50 to 100 watt range. In larger rooms, more than one unit can be installed and driven appropriately to spread low frequencies more evenly across the seating area.

Installation Notes

The subwoofer installs through a 248 mm cutout and needs no more than 99 mm of rear depth, which suits typical stud walls and false ceilings. The finished face is a 287 x 287 mm grille, so the visible result is a discreet square panel that blends with the room’s other architectural speakers.
