The Sonos Sub Mini is the compact wireless subwoofer in the Sonos range, made for the rooms and systems where the full-size Sub is more than the space needs. Bass performance

The two woofers face each other inside the sealed cabinet, so the forces they generate cancel out. That is why the Sub Mini can produce deep, punchy bass while the cabinet itself stays still, with none of the buzzing, rattling or walking across the floor that gives small subwoofers a bad name. Bass stays tight and tuneful rather than boomy, which matters as much for music as it does for film soundtracks.

Handing the low frequencies to the Sub Mini also improves what comes out of the soundbar or speaker it supports. Relieved of trying to reproduce bass it cannot reach, the main unit plays cleaner and louder through the midrange, so dialogue and vocals benefit at the same time as the explosions.

Setup and tuning

Setup follows the usual Sonos pattern: place the subwoofer, plug in the power cable, and add it to your system in the app. Trueplay then measures the room and tunes the output to compensate for placement near walls or in corners, and the app keeps bass level and EQ within reach whenever you want to adjust for a particular film or playlist. The subwoofer connects over Wi-Fi, with a wired Ethernet option for homes where the wireless network is congested.

Design and placement

The rounded, upright cabinet is designed to be seen as little as possible. At 305 mm tall it tucks beside furniture easily, the White finish suits bright rooms, and the open centre core gives the design a light, sculptural quality rather than the black-box look of conventional subwoofers. Because the drivers cancel each other's vibration, placement is flexible and does not need to account for cabinet movement.
