Microphone buying guide

The right microphone is the single biggest upgrade for any recording, whether you sing, podcast, stream, make YouTube videos or perform live. Pro Audio Video stocks condenser, dynamic, USB and shotgun microphones from Rode, Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG, Shure, Audio-Technica, Godox and Saramonic, from affordable starter mics to legendary studio microphones such as the Neumann U 87 Ai.

Types of microphones

  • Large-diaphragm condenser: detailed, warm and sensitive. The standard for studio vocals, voice-over and acoustic instruments. Needs 48V phantom power and a quiet room.
  • Small-diaphragm condenser: accurate and fast, ideal for acoustic guitar, piano, cymbals and choirs.
  • Dynamic: rugged and less sensitive to room noise. Best for podcasts, broadcast, live vocals, guitar amplifiers and drums. The Shure SM7B and SM58 are famous examples.
  • USB microphones: plug straight into a computer with no interface. Great for beginners, streamers and online meetings.
  • Shotgun microphones: highly directional mics for cameras and boom poles in film and video production.
  • Ribbon microphones: smooth, vintage sound for guitar amps, brass and room mics.

Polar patterns explained

  • Cardioid: picks up sound from the front and rejects the rear. The most common pattern for vocals and podcasts.
  • Supercardioid/hypercardioid: tighter pickup for live stages and shotgun mics.
  • Omnidirectional: picks up sound from all directions, for room recordings and group interviews.
  • Figure-8: front and back, used for duets, interviews and stereo techniques.

XLR or USB?

USB microphones are simple and affordable, ideal for single-person streaming and meetings. XLR microphones connect through an audio interface or mixer, giving better quality, more control and the freedom to upgrade parts separately. Some microphones offer both USB and XLR.

Choosing a microphone by use

  • Studio vocals: a large-diaphragm condenser such as a Rode NT1 or Neumann TLM series in a treated room.
  • Podcasts and streaming: a dynamic broadcast mic or Rode PodMic on a boom arm.
  • Live vocals: a dynamic handheld such as a Shure SM58 or Sennheiser e835.
  • YouTube and film: a shotgun mic on camera or a wireless lavalier.
  • Instruments: dynamic mics for amps and drums; small-diaphragm condensers for acoustic instruments.

Getting a better recording

Room acoustics matter as much as the microphone. Record in a room with soft furnishings, use a pop filter for vocals, keep 10 to 20 cm from the mic, and set your interface gain so peaks stay below clipping.

FAQs about Microphone

Should I buy a condenser or dynamic microphone?

Choose a condenser for detailed studio vocals in a quiet room. Choose a dynamic microphone for podcasts, live use or untreated rooms with background noise.

Do I need an audio interface for an XLR microphone?

Yes. XLR microphones need an audio interface or mixer to connect to a computer. Condenser mics also need phantom power from it.

Which microphone is best for podcasting?

Dynamic broadcast microphones such as the Shure SM7B, Rode PodMic and Rode Procaster are popular because they reject room noise.

Can I use a studio microphone for live performance?

Condenser microphones can pick up too much stage noise and feedback. Dynamic microphones are usually better for live vocals.

What is phantom power?

A 48V power supply sent through the XLR cable to power condenser microphones. Most interfaces and mixers provide it.

Does the microphone come with a stand or cable?

It depends on the model. Check the "in the box" section of the product page.

Are your microphones genuine?

Yes. All microphones are genuine with Indian brand warranty and GST invoice.
